Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Probably suffrutescent, habit and height unknown, but apparently stems weakly erect to sprawling.

Stems: Stems often swollen at the nodes, terete (cylindrical), 4–angled or –ridged, at least to 6 dm long, 4–angled in cross section, internodes 2–3 cm long.

Roots: Fibrous root system.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades narrowly lanceolate to oblong–lanceolate, 4–5.3 cm long, 0.5–1.7 cm wide. Apex obtuse, mucronate. Base the broader sessile base weakly clasping the stem and ciliate. Surfaces glandular–puberulent throughout or glabrous;, membranous. Margins entire, slightly thickened and often revolute, with scattered antrorse hooked hairs near the base. Only the midvein evident. Petiolate, weakly to conspicuously connate around the stem. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescence terminal, with 21–140 flowers, 10–30 cm long, diffuse, younger portions glandular–puberulent; bracts green, lanceolate to ovate, those of central axis 3–8 mm long, those of branches and flowers 2–3.5 mm long. Flowers probably bisexual (perfect); pedicels 8–22 mm long. Sepals ca. 3–3.5 mm long, enlarging to 4–4.5 mm long in fruit, green, lanceolate, glandular–puberulent, margins scarious, apex attenuate. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 10; filaments dimorphic, ca. 4 mm long; anther size unknown, yellow. Pollen yellow. Ovary superior, 1-celled; ovule placentation free-central; styles 3.

Fruit: Capsules 3–3.5 mm long; ovoid. Seeds ca. 0.9–1 mm long; the surface of nearly mature seeds smooth; perisperm starchy; hard or rarely soft; true endosperm absent.
